Quilting into Fall

Posted on September 10, 2013 by

I have been involved in several new quilting/fabric projects lately.  Met with textile designer Alison Glass talking about designing fabric and Quilt Market, she was most helpful and I hope a new friend in the art community.  Our Peninsula Modern Quilt Guild is planning a quilt show this fall, so have been working with them and looking forward to that event.

Our new school season at RSA start next week and I have many new ideas for my students.  I love the pillows in the photo from the summer sewing club, great job Mary, Amy and Rose.

Summer Sewing Days

alto sewing machine

I have my last sewing class with my younger students tomorrow.  It is so exciting to see new young people being creative and their interest in sewing.  We have great discussions, I think they all relax when their hands are busy and the thoughts and words just flow.  We have talked a lot about sewing machines and how they work, in my research I found this unique machine. I love when design is always a part of function.

The Alto machne is made for non/beginner sewers.  Easy threading, and the speed is controlled by your hands moving on the fabrics-no foot pedal.  This could be great for students.

It has been crazy, busy around here with many things going on this fall.  School has started and I have three classes so a lot of planning has been happening.  My lesson plans always take a lot of prep, since I am teaching fiber art and design.  While looking around for a “little” house project for my older students I found some great work out there by some creative artists.

The class size is limited due to space, so sign up early to try out this beautiful art form. It has been a couple of years since I offered this class, so I look forward to working with everyone.

Details

So many last minute details to get my class schedule as well as order ready.  I like the combination of printing, applique, embroidery on my bags and pillows.  One of the classes I am planning is a kind of fabric collage using these elements.

With the weather so nice, it is hard to stay indoors. The garden is calling me,  maybe some hand sewing on the porch for now.

Fabric Friday

Posted on October 7, 2011 by

My students have creating their own fabric design for a future project.  We have been using stencils but I hope to bring in some other types of print materials in the future-block and screen printing and maybe some silk direct painting.  Hand printing is very relevant in the arts and crafts world, and getting back to hand made items.  I really hope the art students today will take these new ideas and bring some change in the mass produced items that have taken over.

When we create in my design business I like to think we are making quality items that can be the there for the future-we use natural fabric and real wood.

I love these printed fabrics in photo that I found via Flickr and Found in the Fridge.

I love the combination of many different fabrics, the hand printing pulls it all together.  Does anyone have any hand printing projects out there?
