This is one of the new design I just finished for a rather large hand printed fabric order. I was interesting to translate a small square piece of collage work into yardage of fabric. It did give me a lot of inspiration for future designs. I am currently doing a lot of “playing” with surface design, and will soon have some 1/2 yards and fat quarters on line for sale.
So much going on around here, life and work. I am working on new design ideas as well as techniques for fabric. There is a book that I always like to refer to when I feel stuck or need a little technique refresher, the book is “The Surface Designer’s Handbook” by Holly Brackmann. I recommend it to anyone who would like an overview in adding color and design to textiles. It offer some very good technical information with a lot of step by step and finished product photos.
It has been a great year for strawberries and we have been busy picking and cleaning and freezing. Oliver Farms had a great crop and thy will be having other products coming throughout the season. Another local place, here is Smithfield, to get produce as well as bedding plants is Browder’s Farm. It is so important to support local farms as well as other independent businesses. So go to a Farmer’s Market this week and check out all the lovely selections, this is best time of year to get in the habit of eating well.

I will be demonstrating this weekend in Suffolk at the Art Gallery. It has been a while since I have painted, and in public. i look forward to seeing the other artist at work as well. Stop by if you are local.
Always on the lookout for fashion/color/design inspiration I found this article in the New York Times and it showcases a collaboration of sorts. It is surprising how some people get together in thier work. I work with SA a lot but we are in our own style in design. I would like to find an artisan to work on a project, someone with a different style as well as media could create and interesting challange. This is a great combination, and so much interesting color and pattern. So, who would you love to collaborate with in you work?
I was in Virginia Beach yesterday and dropped off some new “big” tote bags and pillows at Chartreuse. These are nice big bags for the summer to carry to the beach or picnic in some modern prints. Stop by and check them out, as well as all the other creative things in the shop. It is a really beautiful place. We have a very busy week, things are changing fast.
I found these beautiful paintings over at Surface Design. It is so inspirational the different techniques and styles you find in art work. I have been working with fabrics for many years and with silk painting as one my main focus, these wonderful silk paintings presenta very different style, palette, and skill than the way I work. I wish I had time to go to the National Gallery of Art in Washington to see them in person.
If you would like to learn some more, my silk painting class is coming up. Check it out on the classes page.
Earth Day happened this weekend, we weeded, and planted, and mulched all day Saturday and just made it in time for a full day of rain on Sunday. It was a so nice to work with the soil and fuss with the herbs and flowers. Now everything looks so bright and beautiful.
Today we spent the afternoon out in the wind and rain, while the boys were being filmed for a coming attraction “Dillzilla:Titan of Terror!” Elizabeth and her team were great.
A busy week coming up, and more classes to add to the schedule.
Summer fashion is so tricky, as you get older. I especially need to cover my legs-scars. So I like pants, but not capri pants, they just seem to make everyone look short and chunky, I wear them at home and always feel fat. I do love the new wide leg crop pants that are “trendy” this year. I have been making a similar version for years, but know maybe I can purchase a pair as well. On the the next issure….SHOES…..
